National Smoothie Day: Let's Talk About What's Actually in Your Blender

The first day of summer and National Smoothie Day happen to fall on the same date — June 21 — and that feels right. There's nothing more summer than throwing things into a blender and calling it breakfast.

We're smoothie people. Firmly, unapologetically smoothie people. But we've also seen enough "healthy smoothie" recipes that contain 60+ grams of sugar to know that a smoothie is only as good as what goes into it. So in honor of the day, let's talk about building one that actually does what you want it to do.

The Problem With Most Smoothies

The smoothies from most chains, and a lot of the recipes you'll find online, are built around fruit, juice, and sweetened yogurt. That's a lot of fast-digesting carbohydrates with very little protein or fiber to balance them out. The result: a spike in blood sugar, a burst of energy, and then a crash before lunch.

Not exactly the wellness win it looked like on paper.

The Anatomy of a Good Smoothie

A smoothie worth making hits a few marks:

  • Protein (20+ grams) to keep you full and support muscle
  • Fiber from whole fruit or vegetables — not juice, which strips the fiber out
  • Healthy fat from something like almond butter or avocado, which slows digestion and adds satiety
  • Hydration base — water, unsweetened almond milk, or something similar
